Best Tennis Strings for Tennis Elbow

Updated June 2026 - 6 min read

Tennis elbow affects roughly 50% of recreational players at some point. While technique and racquet choice matter, your strings and tension play a huge role in how much shock your arm absorbs on every hit.

What Causes Arm Pain from Strings

Three factors determine how much vibration reaches your arm: string stiffness, tension, and racquet stiffness. Stiff strings like polyester transmit more vibration. High tension creates a smaller sweet spot and harsher mishits. A stiff racquet frame compounds both.

The Best Strings for Arm Comfort

1. Natural Gut

Natural gut like Babolat VS Touch and Wilson Natural Gut is the most arm-friendly string available. It absorbs shock better than any synthetic, maintains tension longer, and delivers excellent power with minimal effort.

2. Multifilament

Multifilament strings like Tecnifibre NRG2, Wilson NXT, and Tecnifibre X-One Biphase mimic natural gut comfort at roughly half the price. They absorb vibration effectively and provide easy power.

3. Hybrid Setup

A hybrid with polyester mains and natural gut or multifilament crosses gives you spin and control from the poly while the softer crosses absorb vibration.

Avoid: Full beds of shaped polyester like Solinco Hyper-G or Tour Bite at high tension. These are the stiffest strings available and the worst choice for tennis elbow.

Tension Matters as Much as String Choice

Lower tension means a larger sweet spot and less shock on off-center hits. If you have tennis elbow, drop your tension 3-5 lbs below your normal range.
